History

Welgevonden Private Game Reserve comprises 37,000 hectares of diverse landscapes and geology in the heart of the Waterberg District in Limpopo. Aptly, Welgevonden translates as 'well found' — a name that reflects the extraordinary natural wealth of this remarkable place.

A Conservation Success Story

The reserve first became a conservation area in 1993, consolidating a number of private farms, removing internal fences and returning this amazing area to its original natural state. What was once fragmented agricultural land has been transformed into one of South Africa's premier private game reserves.

The Waterberg Biosphere

Found in the Waterberg plateau, Welgevonden borders Marakele National Park and lies near the Nylsvlei Wetlands. The region is recognised as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, reflecting its outstanding biodiversity and conservation significance.

Today, Welgevonden is home to over 50 mammal species including the Big 5, close to 300 bird species, and a rich diversity of plant life — all protected within a carefully managed conservation framework.
